Well, the CBC lock-out has (finally) ended, just as the Hockey seasons begins, which has brought some rather sharp criticisim on Robert Rabinovitch's managing style, stating that he seemed more interested in the bottom line rather than the mission of the network (uh, oh!!! shades of "Le grand dérangement").
Ever since my own personaly brush with this management "fad" (shutting down a business or using scabs or other temporary stopgap measures to reduce costs on a temporary basis, the length of which already decided at the beginning) a couple of years back, I became attuned to these hypocritical manuevers that are becoming more and more rampant.
It doesn't take a "conspiracy theorist" to have considered in advance that the CBC's work stoppage would only end when it was the most convenient for them and that was the start of the hockey season. After all "Hockey Night in Canada" is their flagship program and it was inconceivable that they would try to show NOT show the program (Heaven forbid they tried to offer the "no play-by-play" package they used for the CFL or which francophones were stuck with when the SRC was locked out).
Then again, seeing how they let the "La Soirée du Hockey" franchise disappear using the low ratings brought uop by the "silent" treatment and the rising costs, nothing would surprise me. I wounder if the public's outcry would have shamed the government into doing something more pro-active than they did for the francophone side of things.
Of course, the irony of this is that, since hockey is not available on any French networks, the only way, people can watch it is subscribe to RDS (to our "friendly" competitiors), meaning more business to us at work.
I guess what I want to say is that, these work stoppages are really a coward's way out as they consider this a quick fix to fix their money problems and the hell with the employees. Of course, afterwards they expect unwavering loyalty.
Sigh, tommorow Vancouver.
Today's MtG pick is SELESNYA SAGITTARS, which I supposed would be very useful to kick the behinds of the lordly tycoons...
